Trade and transportation by sea have had a special importance and place from ancient times until today. On the other hand, today with the increase of maritime transport, marine pollution and endangering the marine environment, especially in sensitive areas, is more important than ever. The International Maritime Organization (IMO), as the body responsible for the protection of the marine environment, has drafted the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL). In this research, using the library method and descriptive-inductive method IMO measures in the form of MARPOL for the protection of sensitive marine areas have been investigated. Based on the findings of this study, IMO, by formulating MARPOL and including innovative regulations for the identification of marine special areas and then at a higher level and by identifying particularly sensitive marine areas, has provided the necessary ground for the identification and protection of these areas. This has created a mechanism for the sustainability of unique ecosystems and sensitive marine areas.
